After a draw in Sydney, Australia (0-0) another draw in Seoul, South Korea (2-2) a deciding game had to be played between both national teams. To those times no away goals rule existed and therefore a third match took place on neutral ground which was in this case Hong Kong City, Hong Kong. Australia was the lucky winner (1-0, scored by Jimmy Mackay) and received their first World Cup Ticket to Germany '74.

In the end, Australia achieved its historic first-ever qualification in 1973 for the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany, the tournament where the squad led by Manfred Schaefer.

Stats & Facts:

For the friendly match against the then U.S.S.R., the Socceroos wore the away jersey prepared for the 1974 World Cup, which is why the words "World Cup 1974" can be seen under the national coat of arms. Since the Australian national team only wore their home jersey during the World Cup matches, the away jerseys remain unused. This jersey comes directly from Ray Richards, who, however, did not participate in the games against the USSR.
